VOGUEknitting

I bought my first knitting magazine last night. I was browsing Hobby Lobby and took a peek at the magazines. I picked up VOGUEknitting and thought I could learn something from it and gain inspiration. I purchased it for $6.99. The subscription card says you can get 4 issues for $21.97.

I am probably the ideal reader for magazine publishers. I am not a flipper. I read every advertisement and most articles. I slowly start at the top and work my way down and across each page. It took me over an hour to read this magazine and the wealth of knowledge I collected, I continued to dream about all night.

I am going to share some of my favorite highlights from the magazine. You may want to pick up a copy.

Zuny, sheep bookend can be found at mollaspace.com. Never mind, I just checked the website and it is no longer available...

Flying Kites is an organization that provides infant hats for children in Kenya. You can make some and mail them in.

Soak's is a portable tub used for soaking your knitting to free up tubs and sinks. It can also be used as a tote.

Knit Picks has a Seasons Shawl for $22.99. This includes the yarn and the pattern!! They have a choice of two- summer/spring or fall/winter. The fall/winter shawl has dark tones and the spring/summer option is neon and bright. I've been really excited about shawls and wraps recently. I've never made one. My fear is the size of the yarn (lace) and the amount of time I know it is going to take. How I would love to have a piece so beautiful and special though. I have several patterns that interest me. I may want to make this for myself.

Trendsetter yarns introduces a Bamboo Wrap with a free pattern on vogueknitting.com. The shoulder wrap has a loop.

Bernat has a website called Bernat Cares designated to charity opportunities. 48% of all knitters did a charity project in 2009. You can browse charities that interest you and see how you can get involved.

Speaking of "yarn bombing", I saw some on someone's blog and then read an article in VOGUEknitting last night. I find it extremely interesting and would love to participate in it myself. Five years ago, a lady by the name of Magda Sayeg went out at night and "bomb" urban fixtures, like lamp posts, benches, and parking meters with knit graffiti. She left a tag on the items with a website (myspace.com/knittaplease). A crew developed and they had hip-hop aliases like PolyCotN and AKrylik. Several countries have hired her to graffiti their town, even wrap a bus with knit and crochet. A rock on the Great Wall of China has been bombed too! The website and name recently changed from Knitta, Please because of the racist overtones to magdasayeg.com.

Did you know that there is controversy about whether to seam or not to seam? Who knew?! I guess there is a long debate about knitting-in-the-round is better than seaming a piece and visa versa. Well, there is a long article about the pros and cons of each in this issue if you are interested.

This lace stole is the only pattern that I will probably try from the magazine. There are a lot of cardigans and sweaters, but this is my favorite. I think I already know what yarn I am going to use. =)

I hope I shared some useful websites/information that will be beneficial to you and your projects.

Rebekah
